Pfizer and Novartis chiefs lead pharma's CEO influencers on social media, analysis finds

When it comes to pharma CEOs as social influencers, Pfizer’s Albert Bourla is a perfect 10 compared to his peers.

Novartis CEO Vas Narasimhan is a close second, though, with a 9.2 social impact rating — and his status is on the rise, according to Creation Healthcare’s new analysis of pharma CEO social influence.

The CREATION Healthcare analysis compared pharma leaders against each other based on the number of followers, frequency of posts, number of likes received, and the number of comments, both by the CEO and from readers, across social media channels. Health care professionals optimistic as tirzepatide approved for obesity treatment

Also on Nov. 16, the FDA announced the approval of AstraZeneca’s Truqap (capivasertib with fulvestrant) for the treatment of hormone receptor-positive/HER2-negative metastatic breast cancer. After its approval, Paolo Tarantino, MD, a research fellow at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, sparked conversation related to a subanalysis of the CAPItello-291 trial, which was presented at the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium. Overall, HCPs expressed support for its approval, particularly in its capacity as another treatment option for patients with breast cancer.

The findings form part of a wider study by leading digital insights consultancy Creation Healthcare, and are based on the analysis of 2,313 English-language posts on X (formerly Twitter) by 1,633 HCPs throughout November, focusing on the approval and launch of new products.

Paywalls threaten healthcare professional engagement on social media

Creation.co, a specialist digital insights consultancy, is able to track the conversations happening on the platform, and found that less than 2% of HCPs discussing the potential paywall expressed support of the idea.

Further, posts by HCPs showed that in the immediate aftermath of the comments, the number of registrations to a rival social media platform, BlueSky, had ‘dramatically increased’. According to Creation, the general sentiment expressed by HCPs was one of resentment towards potentially losing their network of medical professionals, built up over the years of using the platform.

When asked directly about the likely impact on HCPs with the imposition of a paywall, Jamie Doggett, associate director of insight at Creation, stated: “It’s clear from Creation’s studies of the digital behaviours of HCPs that X provides a unique tool for peer collaboration, and it’s still the biggest network of millions of HCPs tracked by Creation Pinpoint. We have, however, tracked HCPs saying that they refuse to pay for X. It does seem clear that charging for X will drive away some, if not all, HCPs from the platform.”

Could #MedThreads become the new #MedTwitter?

Last month, Meta, the tech giant behind Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, announced the launch of Threads: a direct challenger to its now rebranded rival, X (Twitter).

Within five days, the platform had clocked up 100 million sign-ups. It wasn’t long before Elon Musk took to X to make his displeasure known. But the arrival of the new kid on the block holds implications far beyond Silicon Valley. With 370 million users worldwide, for many X has become an indispensable tool to share information both in their personal and professional lives.

Healthcare is no exception. From Turin to Tokyo, every day hundreds of thousands of healthcare professionals take to X to share professional insights and to seek solutions to clinical challenges. The implications of Threads and the impact it poses for this information sharing is significant.

2022 "Pandemic Saw Rise In Health And Climate Change Related Misinformation, Study Reveals"

‘Tackling the Infodemic’

The challenge is compounded by evidence suggesting that fake news stories relating to the climate have been increasing for a sustained period, and that the reach when each outbreak of fake news does occur is also growing.

This is supported by the study’s research into planetary health conversation online and internet users. The study shows the growth in the number of internet users globally and the number of authors and posts in online planetary health conversations. Despite seeing a reduction in the level of online conversation surrounding planetary health over the course of the pandemic, more recent figures point to a recovery and a return to the pre-pandemic trajectory.

Fears surrounding the growing ‘infodemic’ have prompted experts, such as Daniel Ghinn, Founder and CEO of Creation Healthcare whose team led on the research with GSK, to urge the healthcare industry to seize the opportunity to play a greater role in combating the spread of online misinformation
