Respiratory Tracker: eHCPs call for a national vaccine program to address RSV among UK infants
Between 21 February and 20 March 2024, CREATION Pinpoint® tracked the conversations of UK online healthcare professionals (eHCPs) discussing respiratory diseases on X (Twitter). We analysed 2,529 posts discussing respiratory diseases by 1,051 eHCPs.
On the 1st of March, campaigns urging the public to sign petitions demanding RSV vaccination programmes drove the online respiratory conversation among healthcare professionals. eHCPs prompted The Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH) members to sign an open letter to the UK government to invest in this important programme. The campaign published by the RCPCH was shared 63 times by eHCPs in the UK.
We can transform winters for children and families, and also the NHS, by having a national RSV vaccine program. Please support our campaign to persuade govt to invest in this vital program @RCEMpresident @rcgp @KamilaRCGP https://t.co/0Nca2o1Iol

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) was key for eHCPs discussing respiratory illnesses between February and March in the UK. The hashtag #COPD was used 85 times; eHCPs, including professor and cardiologist Chris P Gale, stressed the importance of cardiopulmonary risks, highlighting the need for guidelines and broader perspectives in the care of COPD patients. Other eHCPs in the conversation, such as respiratory consultant nurse Dr Karen Marshall, drew attention to the difficulty in recruiting COPD patients for clinical trials.
You are going to be hearing a lot more about the term ‘cardiopulmonary risk’ in #COPD. Out now and free in @LancetRespirMed, @cpgale3 and I write on mitigating #MACE in COPD on behalf of the GWGoCPR.

February’s respiratory tracker showed eHCPs in the UK were passionate about guidelines and treatment of asthma. On 29th February, in response to updated guidelines from the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA), eHCPs were prompted to discuss asthma treatment. Several eHCPs reposted guidance directly from GINA to educate peers.
An asthma attack is a signal that something went wrong! 3 of 4: Was a post-attack review done? GINA recommends an assessment within a week to identify and fix modifiable risk factors such as undertreatment with inhaled corticosteroids. https://t.co/Cm9ADXlUYD pic.twitter.com/82WvFsw5QQ
